Dr. Eduard Alentorn Geli is an orthopedic surgeon and traumatologist from Barcelona with extensive training in the field of Sports Medicine and Traumatology, and sub-specialized in shoulder, elbow and knee. Dr. Alentorn has been involved in sport for many years, first completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences at the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC) in Barcelona and obtaining the Extraordinary Award for the best academic record of the promotion. During his Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine at the University of Barcelona, he also completed a Master’s Degree in Clinical Biomechanics of the Locomotor System from the Rovira i Virgili University, a Master’s Degree in High Performance Training in Team Sports from the INEFC-Barcelona, and a PhD from the University of Barcelona with the qualification of LAUDE Unanimously. With this training, Dr. Alentorn began the Specialty of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at the Hospital del Mar i l’Esperança (Autonomous University of Barcelona). The Doctor completed the Specialty of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology with extensive accumulated experience in the clinical, surgical and academic fields, having visited multiple centers of Sports Medicine and Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Shoulder and Elbow Surgery in Spain and the United States of America: University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (Iowa City, Iowa, USA), Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center (New York, USA), Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD, USA), Hospital for Special Surgery (New York, USA), University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, PA, USA), Rush University (Chicago, IL, USA), Mount Sinai Medical Center (New York, NY, USA) and Hospital La Paz (Madrid, Spain). Prior to completing his residency in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, Dr. Alentorn obtained the validation of his Bachelor of Medicine degree by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) of the United States and obtained the Medical License to practice as a doctor in that country. Dr. Alentorn received the Resident of the Year award from the Spanish Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, which is awarded to the best resident intern in Spain who completes the Specialty of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology in the period 2009-2014. Shortly after, the Doctor obtained the prestigious European Title of Specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology by the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EBOT). Dr. Alentorn obtained a place to carry out a year of official accredited sub-specialization in Sports Medicine and Traumatology at the renowned Duke University (Durham, NC, United States), learning novel techniques in arthroscopic and open knee and shoulder surgery. In addition, he was a physician for the University’s football, football, and basketball teams and also covered the national Hockey and Lacrosse championships. During the following year, Dr. Alentorn completed a second accredited official sub-specialization in this case in Reconstructive Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the prestigious Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, USA), repeatedly considered the best clinic in the country by US News Best Hospitals magazine, and for many the best clinic in the world in shoulder and elbow surgery. During that year, the Doctor learned reconstruction techniques for any simple and complex pathology of the Shoulder and Elbow, as the Mayo Clinic is a national and international reference place in this area. Upon returning from the United States with extensive training in the areas of Shoulder, Elbow, Knee and Sports Traumatology, the Doctor joined the group of the world-renowned Dr. Ramón Cugat, considered an expert in sports pathology, arthroscopy and arthroscopic knee surgery. Dr. Alentorn has developed his professional activity as an orthopedic surgeon and traumatologist specializing in simple and complex Shoulder, Elbow and Knee surgery at the Cugat Institute (located in Hospital Quirónsalud, Barcelona) and at the Catalan Mutual Society of Footballers from 2016 to 2024. At the teaching level, Dr. Alentorn served for 4 years as a professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at the CTO Academy for the preparation of the MIR Exam at the state level. In addition, he has been an external lecturer on the Master’s Degree in Sports Rehabilitation at the Escola Universitària de la Salut i l’Esport – EUSES (a centre attached to the University of Girona), teaching the subject of Pathophysiology and Injury Mechanism in Sports Traumatology. Dr. Alentorn currently also serves as an Accredited Professor by the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery, and Arthroscopy (ESSKA). On a scientific level, Dr. Alentorn has contributed significantly to a multitude of presentations in national and international courses and conferences (see Curriculum Vitae) and is the author of 200 international publications in indexed journals (Source: Google Scholar) and more than 10 international book chapters, with an H-index of 44. Dr. Eduard Alentorn is a member of several Spanish and European scientific societies such as the Spanish Association of Arthroscopy (AEA), the Spanish Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (SECHC) or the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery, and Arthroscopy (ESSKA).). Dr. Alentorn has served on the Board of Directors of the SECHC and the shoulder section within the ESSKA (the ESA section), and has served as a member of the Scientific Committee for the organization of the biannual Congress of the society itself on two occasions. Eduard Alentorn has been working as Associate Editor for the European journal Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, and Arthroscopy (KSSTA), the official journal of ESSKa, for more than 10 years.
